How Common is the Problem?
In the United States alone, more than 50% of the prison population has some type of mental illness. Along with this, about 26% of inmates reported a hearing, visual, or mobility disability. People behind bars in state and federal prisons are nearly three times as likely to report having a disability as the non-incarcerated population. (Cassidy, W., Brown, K., & Jackson, M, 2012)
